Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late Nigerian gospel artist Osinachi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for her murder. This was handed down by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on April 28, 2025.
Nwachukwu was found guilty of culpable homicide over the death of Osinachi, who passed away on April 8, 2022. Osinachi’s death had originally seemed to be caused by cancer, but investigations revealed that she had been a victim of prolonged domestic violence. Witnesses, including family members, church members, and neighbors, testified that Nwachukwu had repeatedly abused Osinachi.
It was found that he kicked her in the chest just before her death, which directly caused her fatal injuries. After Osinachi’s passing, Nwachukwu was arrested and charged with 23 counts, including culpable homicide (which carries the death penalty), criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, spousal battery, and other offenses.

His trial commenced in June 2022, with the prosecution presenting 17 witnesses, including Osinachi’s two children, who testified about the abuse. Nwachukwu’s defense team presented four witnesses and submitted four exhibits, arguing for leniency. However, the court ruled that the prosecution’s case had been proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
Besides the death sentence for culpable homicide, Nwachukwu was sentenced to other convictions. These included two years in prison for some of the offenses, six months for another, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for other offenses.
The verdict comes after a long trial that highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence, with Nwachukwu now paying the ultimate price for his offense in the death of his wife.
