2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, was at the Vatican in Rome, Italy, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, to join the rest of the world to pay his last respects to the late head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday, being Easter Monday, at about 7:03 AM at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. The cause of his demise was due to multiple health complications, even though he attended mass on Easter Sunday.
Pope Francis’ burial has been fixed for Saturday, April 26, 2025; however, his burial activities began today, with his casket displayed for public viewing at the Vatican chapel.
Peter Obi was among the many notable individuals all over the world who went to pay respects to Pope Francis at his lying in state.

The Labour Party presidential candidate took to his Facebook handle to eulogize the Pope, saying that Pope Francis was more than a Pontiff, that he was a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference.
“His life was a testament to leadership as a sacred duty, one rooted in compassion, truth, and service to the poor and marginalised. He lived for others, spoke for the voiceless, and reminded us all that leadership must be about lifting others, not self-exaltation,” he wrote.
Peter Obi also recalled his encounter with Pope Francis. According to him, he has met the late Pope on three occasions, and “each encounter left a lasting impression. He radiated peace and inspired faith, and his presence was a quiet yet powerful reminder of the divine responsibility that leadership entails. His humility was infectious, his vision deeply human.”
President Bola Tinubu, former vice president of Nigeria, and Atiku Abubakar are among the notable Nigerians and non-Christians to have written tributes to the Pope.
