The Vatican published the first photo and video of Pope Francis lying in state on Tuesday, with the deceased pontiff shown in an open casket clad in red liturgical robes, a mitre on his head, and a rosary in his hands.
PUNCH Online reports that the Holy See Press Office announced that the funeral of Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10am in St. Peter’s Square.
The announcement, as per the report, states Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, “Will preside at the Mass, which will be concelebrated by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from all over the world.”

It went on, “The Celebration of the Eucharist will be followed by the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio. The body of Pope Francis will then be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica and subsequently to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for burial.”
Before the funeral, the coffin containing the Pope’s body will be transferred from the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica.”
