Gwaska Dankarami, a notorious terrorist leader, and over 100 of his followers were killed following a military operation centered in the northwestern part of Nigeria, marking one of the most significant victories in the ongoing war against terrorism and banditry in the region.

Dankarami, who had been on security watchlists for years, was reportedly hiding in the Munumu Forest when the military launched an attack on him and his followers.

Several criminal hideouts within the terrain were also destroyed during the operation.

According to security sources, Dankarami was a second-in-command to an Islamic State-linked leader and had been coordinating deadly attacks across several communities in Katsina State.

The operation, which took place on April 12, occurred days following the abduction of 43 villagers and the death of four persons who were brutally murdered by bandits somewhere in Maigora, a community in Katsina.

The Nigerian Police confirmed it had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, which culminated in the Friday operation.

“This successful mission has significantly disrupted the criminal networks that have long terrorized communities across Faskari, Kankara, Bakori, Malumfashi, and Kafur,” said Nasir Mua’zu, Katsina State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs.”

Although the military had claimed to have eliminated Dankarami in 2022, this latest operation appears to offer tangible evidence. Authorities reported recovering heavy weaponry at the scene, including two machine guns and several locally fabricated shotguns.

In a separate operation on Thursday, troops neutralized six additional bandits, including a key commander. Several others fled with gunshot wounds, while seven motorcycles used by the gang were recovered at the scene.
