The Flamingos of Nigeria continued their impressive run at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic with a 4-0 thrashing of Ecuador in their second Group A match on Saturday night at Estadio Cibao, Santiago de Los Caballeros to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Bankole Olowookere’s side dominated their South American opponents from start to finish, to secure a decisive victory that propelled them to the tournament’s last eight and becoming the first team to do so, having secured six points from two matches.

The attacking midfielder, Shakirat Moshood who was the star of the match scored a brace, after opening the scoring in the 28th minute from the spot kick before rounding off the match with a goal six minutes into added time to take her tally to 3 goals in two games. Harmony Chidi made it 2-0 in the 54th minute before Peace Effiong added a third in the 66th Minute.

Nigeria are expected to claim a comfortable victory when they face the hosts Dominican Republic in their final group game at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez, Santo Domingo next Wednesday, a match which will afford coach Bankole Olowookere the opportunity to test new legs ahead of the knockout stage.

The Flamingos who finished third in the last edition in India have participated in every edition of the competition since its inception in 2008, reaching the quarter-finals in 2010, 2012, and 2014 before breaking their quarter-final jinx in the 2022 edition defeating the USA to reach their first-ever semi-finals.
