During a courtesy visit by the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, on Friday in the Ministry headquarters in Abuja, Minister of Education Olatunji Alausa suggested that the scheme be extended from one year to two.

The education minister also called for the expansion of the Skills Acquisition & Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Training Programme content for corps members.

Minister Alausa also implored the NYSC to deploy corps members to schools in rural settlements because of the lack of manpower in those places.

He commended the NYSC for their innovative efforts to end the certificate racketeering by Nigerian graduates from foreign institutions within West Africa and also resolving the issue with part-time OND and full-time HND graduates who were earlier exempted from the mandatory service.

The minister told the NYSC DG that efforts were being made to digitize the verification of foreign-trained graduates from Nigeria while looking forward to collaboration with the NYSC to improve education in Nigeria for national development.

Responding, the NSYC DG, Brig. Gen. Olankunle Nafiu, appraised the minister for the ministry’s efforts in improving education in Nigeria but suggested that a database should be created for Nigerian youths going abroad to study; that it would help in the easy identification of fake graduates.
