The Democratic Movement (DM), made up of Nigerians living in the United States of America, has planned a protest at the White House against the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and other elected officials in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.
They have requested immediate reinstatement of Similayani Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, and his deputy, who were suspended by the president of Nigeria after a declaration of a State of Emergency in the state over political conflicts, while a sole administrator was appointed.
The diasporan group wants to express their displeasure with President Tinubu’s action through a protest at the U.S. Presidential villa, the White House, according to a statement released on Thursday, April 3, 2025, by the group’s president, Cosmos Achief.

With the protest, the group would be sending a message to Nigerians and the rest of the political world at large about the dangers of such undemocratic action by the president of Nigeria, while they call on President Trump to urge Nigerian stakeholders to restore constitutional order.
According to Achief, the protest seeks to draw global attention to the “direct assault on democracy” perpetrated by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
“We cannot stand by while an elected governor is removed, an entire legislature suspended, and an unelected administrator imposed. These actions set dangerous precedents that threaten Nigeria’s democratic fabric,” Achief said.
“We are calling on President Trump to urge Nigerian officials to restore constitutional order. The world must be made aware of the undemocratic actions taking place in Rivers State.
“President Tinubu’s decision could lead to diplomatic consequences, portraying Nigeria as a nation veering toward dictatorship,” he added.
