The Nigerian Green Chambers, otherwise known as the House of Representatives, have passed a bill to prevent candidates above 60 years of age from contesting for the office of the president and state governor to second reading.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. member Rt. Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere of Ideato North/South, Imo State, seeks to automatically disqualify presidential and governorship candidates above the age of 60.

The bill seeks an amendment of the 1999 constitution, Sections 131 and 177, on the requirements for political offices, applying age limits for both the presidency and gubernatorial candidates.
If the bill is successfully passed into law, it would hinder the likes of Tinubu, 72, Nigeria’s current president; Atiku Abubakar, 78; Peter Obi, 63; etc., from contesting in the next elections and subsequent elections.
Several other bills have been passed for second reading, including bill to create an additional local government area, Ideato West in Imo State; bill to include Youths and Persons with Disabilities in political appointments; bill to reserve Seats for Women in National and State Assemblies; etc.
