Nigerian-UK-born Super Eagles and Fulham Football Club defender has shared his encounter with racists after the English Football Association (FA) Cup match against Manchester United on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

The match, which was played at the Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, saw Bassey give a lead to his away side Fulham in the dying minutes of halftime.

Although Bruno Fernandez later leveled the score for the Red Devils side, the match still ended in victory for the West London club after a penalty shootout, which qualified them for the next round while ending the race for Manchester United.

After the match, it seems Calvin Bassey was the hero of the day, as his stunning header gave Fulham the lead, which pushed Manchester United into looking for an equalizer late till 70 minutes of game time.

To his shock, Calvin Bassey received racial and discriminatory messages on his Instagram from what could seem to be aggrieved Manchester United fans, with the usual things like “Monkey”, “nigger”, “black boy”, etc.

In a post on its Instagram handle, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) condemned the racial abuse on Calvin Bassey, while showing their unwavering support for the Super Eagles star.

“The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in the face of these unacceptable actions. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all players, both on and off the field. Calvin has our unwavering support, and together, we will continue to fight against racism in football and society,” @thenff_official wrote.
