Court Sentences Five Men to Death by Hanging for the Murder of an alleged 'Witch' in Kano

The witch was ultimately vanquished by five men who believed she was a village witch. Since they suspected the woman was engaging in witchcraft, they intended to put an end to her activities. In light of this unsettling witchcraft behavior, the woman was attacked by the five men.

The defendant was a 67-year-old woman, Dahare Abubakar, who, according to reports, was at her property when it happened.

In the community, witches were typically blamed for illness, bad luck, or the death of a family member. Consequently, the five men attacked the old woman, which led to her death by beating and stabbing.

This incident occurred in Nigeria’s Kano State, the largest city in northern Nigeria, in 2023.

Judge Usman Na’abba and the prosecutor, Abba Sorondiki, were among the members of the village court who responded to the case promptly. It was determined that a murder case had been committed.

According to the court, the deceased was killed when Abdulaziz Yahaya, the ailing wife of one of the defendants, dreamt that Ms. Abubakar, carrying a knife, was pursuing her.

The court had drawn to a conclusion, and the case was indeed beyond reasonable doubt as the five men were sentenced to death by hanging.

The prosecutor, Abba Sorondiki, expressed his hope that the verdict will discourage others from falsely accusing someone and then taking matters into their own hands.

“There have been similar cases like this; however, this is the first time we are seeing up to five people sentenced to death for murder over wrongful witchcraft accusations,” Mr. Sorondiki stated to the BBC.
