An Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the brutal murder of a couple and their son.

The victims, Kehinde Fatinoye, a former staff member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); his wife, Bukola Fatinoye; and their son, Oreoluwa, were killed on New Year’s Day in 2023.

The attack occurred shortly after the family returned home from a crossover service at Christ Anglican Church, Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta.

According to court findings, the assailants—led by Bukola’s driver—broke into their semi-detached home, murdered the couple, and set their bodies on fire.

Their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted house help, Olorunyomi Felix, were tied up and thrown into the Ogun River.

The tragedy struck just months after the family had lost their younger son, Oluwatunmise, who died in June 2022 while playing football.

After a trial lasting several hours, Justice Basirat Adebowale sentenced Adekambi Lekan (the deceased couple’s driver), Odetola Ahmed, and Adeniyi Waheed to death.

The court found them guilty of multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, murder, arson, and perverting the course of justice.

The trio were arraigned alongside several others: Fadairo Temitope (wife of the first defendant), Adekambi Adenike (mother of the first defendant), Owolaja Aanuoluwapo, Usman Azeez, Abass Odetola, and Adewusi Lukman.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Adebowale ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The court noted the gruesome nature of the crime and denied the convicts any leniency, rejecting their lawyers’ pleas for mercy.

With this verdict, justice has been served for the tragic loss of the Fatinoye family.
