The Federal Government is ready to receive Nigerians who may be deported from the United States, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

Speaking with Vanguard on Tuesday, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Corporate Affairs, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is leading efforts to manage the situation.

“The Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee, comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), should there be mass deportation of Nigerians from the US,” Balogun said.

However, he clarified that NiDCOM has no information on any Nigerian currently being processed for deportation.

The situation comes amid a U.S. immigration crackdown led by Donald Trump, which has placed about 3,690 Nigerians at risk of deportation, as earlier reported by Igbo Tv.

A document from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), seen by The PUNCH, reveals that as of November 24, 2024, more than 1.4 million non-citizens are on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders.

Nigerians are among those affected, though Mexico and El Salvador top the list with 252,044 and 203,822 individuals facing deportation, respectively.

Meanwhile, U.S. authorities have intensified immigration enforcement. Just last week, hundreds of migrants were arrested, and some were deported via military aircraft as the mass deportation plan took effect.
