A 35-year-old businesswoman, Edith Nwachukwu, was arrested in Imo State for the brutal assault of her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke.
The arrest occurred on the evening of Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the Relief Market in Owerri, after the intervention of local traders and police.
The suspect allegedly accused the minor of stealing her money and proceeded to subject her to severe physical punishment, with reasons that she was angry.
Eyewitnesses engaged Igbo Tv on the events, saying that, Nwachukwu had already inflicted visible injuries on the girl and was attempting to purchase more canes to continue the assault when traders intervened.

Chidiebube Okeoma, a local journalist and founder of the Stand for Humanity Foundation, was the one who alerted the police.
The victim was immediately rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment due to the severity of her injuries.
Speaking to the media, Okeoma stated, “The girl was clearly traumatized. It took the courage of traders and quick police intervention to save her.”
The accused reportedly admitted to the assault, claiming she acted out of anger after accusing the girl of theft—an allegation the victim denied.
Kelechi, who hails from Amaeke Adam in Abia State, is currently receiving medical care, while the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Child rights advocates and community members have expressed outrage at the incident, calling for stronger enforcement of laws protecting children from domestic abuse.
The police assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and appropriate charges filed.
