Assistant Superintendent of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Halisu Sahabi, tragically lost his life during an operation in Awka, Anambra State.
He was part of a team targeting suspected internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys.”
The incident occurred when a suspect, Chukwuka Josiah Ikechukwu Nnamdi, a medical doctor, resisted arrest and allegedly opened fire using a pump-action gun.
According to reports, the EFCC team had successfully conducted an earlier raid and was moving to another location when Nnamdi, believing the operatives to be robbers, refused to cooperate.

When they forced their way in, he fired at them, fatally wounding Sahabi and injuring another officer. Nnamdi later attempted to hide in a neighbor’s ceiling but was apprehended by the combined efforts of the police and EFCC operatives.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that Sahabi was rushed to a hospital, but delays in receiving urgent medical care contributed to his untimely death.
The officers, reportedly without protective vests, faced severe risks during the operation. Sahabi, who had recently been promoted, was planning to marry soon after the fasting season.
This heartbreaking incident has sparked discussions about the manner with which Law enforcement officers break into peoples homes during their operations, especially at a time where insecurity is on the rise.
Olewunne Chioma Ezurike reacted saying;
“Its sad, but thats the disadvantages of forcefully entering into someone’s house, thats what thieves do. I think EFCC should derive other means of arrest rather than this forcefully entering into someones house. In this serious time of insecurity, everybody is at alert. Its very sad”
