African-American Hollywood actor, Djimon Hounsou has revealed that he is underpaid and struggling financially even though he has been in the movie business for two decades.
Speaking during an interview session with CNN African Voices, the Benin Republic citizen discussed the issue of racism and how it has affected his success in film-making.
The actor who has featured in countless blockbuster movies said he is still struggling to make ends meet, even with two Oscars nominations.
“I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades, with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, yet I’m still struggling to make ends meet. I’m definitely underpaid,” Djimon Hounsou said.

He also mentioned that racism is still very much in practise in the Hollywood movie industry, revealing how he was denied an Oscars nomination despite being nominated for the Golden Globe Awards.
He explained that the industry did not think he was deserving of respect, despite his accomplishments in acting.
“I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars, thinking I had just come off the boat and the streets.

“Even though I accomplished that, they didn’t see me as an actor deserving of respect.
“So, this conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change overnight,” he stated.
Djimon Hounsou was born in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, and started his acting career in 1990 starring in the movie “Without You I’m Nothing”.
