On Thursday December 26, 2024 being Boxing day, a sad incidence was reported by the Catholic Church, Diocese of Nnewi, in Anambra State, reports Sahara Reporters.
It is reported that Mr. Tobias Okonkwo, a priest at Nnewi Diocese was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Ihiala Local Government Area, along Onitsha-Owerri Expressway, around 7 p.m.
Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu a fellow priest in the Diocese who confirmed the incident said the funeral arrangements of the slain Father Okonkwo would be communicated soon.

Late Fr. Okonkow was an indigene of Ekwulumili in Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state, and was also a pharmacist, and had served as the manager of the various schools of nursing such as Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Ihiala.
The Anambra State Police Command have however, said they are not aware of the news.
Recall that Igbo Tv had sometimes ago reported similar occurrence where a Catholic Priest, identified as Reverend Father Gerald Ohaeri, serving at Isienu Nsukka Parish, under Nsukka Catholic Diocese, was abducted while travelling along the Ugwuogo Nke-Opi Nsukka expressway in Enugu State.
This and other related incidences underscores the level of insecurity in Southeast of Nigeria.
