The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported after a survey that over 25 million mobile phones were lost to theft in Nigeria between March 2023 and April 2024.

According to the report, 17.96 million Nigerians lost their phones to theft within one year, which implies that some persons lost more than one phones.

The report also stated that out of the 17,965,741 persons that lost their phones, only 10 per cent or less reported the case to the police, this according to NBS is because people lack trust in police.

Out of the 10 per cent that reported to the police, only 11.7 per cent were able to get back their phones.

Other reasons why some people refused to report their stolen phones is because they believe phone theft is not serious enough to be reported to the police, while some believe the police would do nothing after all.

The case of phone stealing in Nigeria is very rampant, and in most of the cases, the thieves are armed with weapons. Many cases have been reported in Port Harcourt where victims who proofed too stubborn were shot or stabbed and their gadgets taken from them.

Some victims said theirs were being snatched from guys on a moving bike. One victim of phone theft told Igbo Tv, he was pressing his phone inside a commercial vehicle when some boys snatched it from outside and ran off.
