National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed fake and expired drinks in Aba, Abia State.
The raid was carried out in Eziuku market, popularly known as Cemetary market, located in Aba, Abia State.
It is reported that imitations of drinks are being manufactured in the market and sold out across the nation.
NAFDAC carried out the raid to end the illicit business that is destructive to the health, which has continued to be on the increase.

The Agency’s Southeast Zone Director, Martins Iluyomade, while speaking to the TVC Abia State newsmen stated that the market is where production of fake drinks of several types are being done, and marketed across Nigeria, and it is quite difficult for people to know the difference between the original and what is produced here.
“There is no kind of drinks you are looking for in Nigeria, that is not being manufactured here. And it’s quite difficult for you to know the difference,” Iluyomade said.
The director pointed out that NAFDAC would never register anything manufactured in the market. That a follow up had been done after their engagement with the same market in 2023, and got approval and orders from the Abia State Government to do some things.
Director Martins Iluyomade advised consumers to be cautious of what they buy and consume, as such counterfeit products are likely to harm one’s kidney and liver.
“This is a season of merriment, you should open your eyes, don’t just merry and damage your kidney and liver because you are merrying. It actually doesn’t make sense.
The Director also emphasized that consumers and marketers should buy products only from accredited distributors who they know, are being supplied by original manufacturers.
A number of adulterated wines, soft drinks, gins and beverages were destroyed during the raid.
The Agency promised to take sustainable measures to ensure the trend is prohibited. However, as the Agency strives to battle these illicit manufacturers, consumers should also make efforts to check expiry dates on drinks and be careful of whom they buy from.
