A report from Premium Times tells of an ugly incidence which occurred on Wednesday in Anambra State.

The report states that some vigilante exchanged gunfires with policemen at Izuchukwu Junction along Nnobi-Nnewi Road in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra state; the area where Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s funeral will be holding on Friday.

The shootout which happened around 7 p.m got two passers-by injured and a Toyota-Venza burnt to ashes, after both policemen and vigilantes mistook themselves for pro-Biafrans.

Residents of the area also thought it was a shootout between policemen and some pro-Biafran gunmen threatening to disrupt the funeral of the Senator.

A police statement from the police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.

Ikenga noted that the “local security operatives mistook the police as unfriendly forces and opened fire at them.”

He explained that non-state actors were not involved in the attack, and it was not an attempt to disrupt the Senator’s funeral.

What premeditated the attack was that, the local security operatives trailed a suspect to a checkpoint, and thought the parties ahead were a group of pro-Biafran gunmen, so they opened fire.

In the heat of the exchange, bullet hit the fuel tank of a Toyota-Venza and it was razed.

Two passers-by were hit also, and have been taken to the hospital.

The police superintendent mentioned that a joint security operation would be installed to ensure that Nnewi is calm for the Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s funeral.
