President Bola Tinubu has submitted the name of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to the Senate for confirmation as Nigeria’s new Defence Minister. The nomination, announced by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, comes only days after Mohammed Badaru Abubakar stepped down from the role.
Tinubu said he believes Musa has the experience and capacity to strengthen the country’s security system. The retired general was seen at the Presidential Villa on December 1, where he had a private meeting with the President shortly before Badaru’s resignation became public.

Musa, who turns 58 on December 25, previously served as CDS from 2023 until he was relieved of the post in October 2025. Known for his long military career, he began his education in Sokoto before moving on to the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986, graduating with a B.Sc in 1991 and joining the army as a Second Lieutenant the same year.
Throughout his service, he held several key positions: Commanding Officer of 73 Battalion, Deputy Chief of Staff (Training/Operations), Sector Commander for Operation Lafiya Dole and the Multinational Joint Task Force, and later Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai. He eventually became Commander of the Infantry Corps before Tinubu appointed him Chief of Defence Staff.
His return to government marks another shift in the country’s defence leadership as the administration pushes to reorganise Nigeria’s security framework.
