Three members of Governor Alex Otti’s advance team were attacked early Tuesday near the Sam Mbakwe Airport area in Owerri, Imo State. The assault happened along the Umuowa–Ihite stretch, just a short distance from the airport junction.
According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha, the men were on official duty to the airport when unidentified gunmen suddenly opened fire on their vehicle. The attackers were said to be fleeing when they ran into the team’s car and shot at it.

Ukoha stressed that Governor Otti was nowhere near the scene and that it was not his main convoy, as some reports had suggested. Thankfully, no life was lost, though the attack left the team shaken.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns about rising insecurity around key travel corridors in Imo State.
