Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from his position with immediate effect. His resignation was contained in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, where he explained that he was leaving office due to health reasons.
Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development on Monday, noting that President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation. According to officials close to the presidency, the President is expected to notify the Senate of a new nominee sometime this week.

Badaru, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His departure comes at a particularly tense moment, as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency and is expected to give more details on the scope and direction of the new security strategy soon.
While the full impact of Badaru’s exit is yet to unfold, the announcement has stirred conversations within government circles, especially considering Nigeria’s current security challenges.
Nonetheless, the presidency maintains that the transition will be smooth and that leadership at the Defence Ministry will not be left vacant for long.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, taking to his Facebook page, has alleged that the Defence Minister did not resign but was asked to step aside by President Tinubu to make room for former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to be appointed Defence Minister.
According to Sowore, there are also strong indications that U.S. President Donald Trump’s United States military is pressing for the removal of “the equally ineffective and utterly useless” Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, over serious concerns of intelligence sharing and collaboration. That Matawalle is widely accused of having links to bandits in Zamfara.
