BREAKING: Inmates Declare Nnamdi Kanu ‘Prison President’ in Sokoto Prison

Inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Sokoto have reportedly named the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as their “Prison President” shortly after his arrival, according to a report by The Sun.

Kanu, recently sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho, was found guilty of seven terrorism-related charges, including secessionist activities, membership of a proscribed group, attacks on security operatives, destruction of public property, and the importation of an unregistered radio transmitter. After years in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), he was transferred to the Sokoto prison to begin his sentence.

Sources told Daily Sun that his entry into the facility sparked unusual excitement. Inmates reportedly rushed toward him, eager to shake his hand and welcome him. Many referred to him as a man who “speaks boldly and without fear.”

A senior correctional officer, who requested anonymity, described the atmosphere around Kanu as extraordinary. “He has practically turned his block into a kind of mini Radio Biafra. Even inmates who previously opposed him now sit quietly to hear him speak. No one compels them; his words simply draw them,” the official said.

According to him, Kanu’s influence within the facility has grown quickly, driven not just by his political stance but by the confidence and conviction with which he expresses himself. “Whether or not they share his views, everyone acknowledges his fearlessness. That alone has made him a notable figure here,” the officer added.

Kanu remains in custody as authorities continue to enforce the court’s verdict.
