The Nigeria Police Force has begun a sweeping nationwide withdrawal of Mobile Police officers attached to high-profile individuals, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to end VIP policing and redirect officers to core security duties.
A memo from the MOPOL 50 Squadron in Abuja ordered all personnel attached to 20 top figures; including former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Namadi Sambo; FCT Minister Nyesom Wike; former First Lady Aisha Buhari; the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun; and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III—to report back to base by 2 p.m. on November 27, 2025. Similar directives were issued at SPU Base 16 in Lagos.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed that 11,566 officers previously deployed to VIPs and special beats had already been withdrawn. He debunked reports claiming over 120,000 officers were attached to private individuals, calling them “lies,” and stressing that full compliance was assured under the President’s authority.
According to the IGP, the redeployment marks a major restructuring aimed at strengthening frontline operations as the force battles manpower shortages. He said the returning officers would be strategically deployed to high-risk and underserved areas, with welfare remaining a priority.
Egbetokun also highlighted recent operational achievements, including the arrest of 822 suspects, recovery of 249 firearms and nearly 21,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as the rescue of 232 kidnapped victims nationwide.
With the festive season approaching, the police have activated enhanced security measures; reinforced highway patrols, intelligence-driven operations, surveillance drones, and joint task deployments across major routes and border points.
He further assured Nigerians that school safety remains a top priority, with investigations underway into recent security breaches and renewed efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
