Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is currently stranded in Guinea-Bissau following Wednesday’s sudden military takeover. Jonathan, who had travelled to the country as part of an international observer mission for the just-concluded elections, has been unable to leave alongside several other foreign delegates.
The political atmosphere in Bissau shifted dramatically after a group of military officers announced that they had taken “total control” of the state.

This declaration came barely a day after both leading candidates (incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition candidate Fernando Dias) separately claimed victory in the polls, even though official results are yet to be released.
Identifying themselves as the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” the officers said they were suspending the entire electoral process indefinitely. They also ordered the closure of all land, air and sea borders and imposed a night-time curfew across the country.
Following the announcement, many diplomats, election observers and foreign nationals rushed to the airport in an attempt to leave but were unable to do so due to the immediate shutdown of all exit routes.
Jonathan and other observers remain in the capital, monitoring the unfolding situation as uncertainty deepens over Guinea-Bissau’s political future.
