Residents of a rural community in Katsina State took matters into their own hands after bandits invaded Sabun Binin in Babanlu village, abducting several locals and demanding an astonishing ₦100 million ransom per victim.
According to multiple accounts and a viral video circulating on social media, the villagers recognised some of the attackers and decided they would not remain helpless. Working with local vigilantes, they reportedly traced the bandits’ families and carried out their own counter-kidnapping, seizing the parents and brothers of the suspected criminals.

When the bandits later called to open ransom negotiations, the villagers refused. Instead, they informed the gang that talks would only begin after their own abducted relatives were safely returned.
The standoff reportedly lasted three tense days.
Faced with the pressure and unwilling to risk harm to their family members, the bandits eventually backed down. They released all the kidnapped villagers unharmed and, in a surprising twist, allegedly handed each victim ₦30,000 as transport fare back home.
Only after confirming the safe return of their people did the villagers release the bandits’ relatives.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, with many users expressing shock, humour, and admiration at the villagers’ bold response. Others, however, worry that such retaliatory actions, while effective in this case, highlight the state’s weakened capacity to protect rural communities from banditry.
Despite the dramatic outcome, residents say they simply want lasting peace, not further cycles of violence.
