BREAKING: Tinubu Orders Withdrawal of Police Escorts From all VIPs

President Bola Tinubu has directed that police officers attached to VIPs across the country be withdrawn immediately and reassigned to regular policing duties.

The decision came after a security briefing the President held on Sunday in Abuja with service chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, security protection for VIPs will now be handled by armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, not the police.

Onanuga explained that many rural communities are left with very few police officers, making it difficult to respond effectively to threats. He said the President’s goal is to strengthen police visibility nationwide amid rising security concerns.

To further boost manpower, Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers. The Federal Government is working with state governments to upgrade police training facilities to support this expansion.

Those at the security meeting included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the DG of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

The move to pull escorts from VIPs follows years of public concern over the heavy deployment of police officers to politicians, business figures, and other influential individuals, leaving regular citizens with limited security coverage.
