BREAKING: "I have activated a strategy to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release" — Gov. Alex Otti Says Moves Already Underway

Abia State Governor Alex Otti says he has activated a comprehensive strategy aimed at securing the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, following his recent life imprisonment sentence by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Otti disclosed that the plan—which he began discussing with top government authorities during the course of Kanu’s trial—will now be intensified. According to him, he has already communicated certain agreements reached during his visit to Kanu in DSS custody.

“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I have activated and will continue to pursue the agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” he said.

The governor, who faulted the early handling of IPOB-related tensions, warned that mismanagement at the initial stages contributed to the current crisis. He appealed for calm, stressing that political and diplomatic options remain the surest path to resolving the matter permanently.

Otti also cautioned politicians against exploiting Kanu’s situation for personal gain, urging them instead to support collective efforts aimed at securing his release. He reaffirmed his readiness to work with other stakeholders, including well-meaning Nigerians, to engage the Federal Government respectfully and constructively.

“The Federal Government did not create this problem, but it has the capacity to resolve it with courage and compassion,” he said.

While acknowledging the shock and grief that followed Kanu’s sentencing, Otti urged residents of Abia and the wider South-East to avoid inflammatory statements and actions that could undermine ongoing dialogues.

He concluded by expressing confidence that, with sustained diplomatic engagement, a resolution is within reach and Kanu will eventually regain his freedom.
