Archbishop Emeritus of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has insisted that the Nigerian government knows the identities of those responsible for the ongoing killings across the country.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, the respected cleric expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation, saying the recent surge in killings and abductions leaves no room for denial. He stressed that the reality of Nigerians being killed “cannot be contradicted by anyone.”

Cardinal Onaiyekan criticised what he described as the Federal Government’s habit of dismissing or downplaying reports of widespread violence. According to him, this defensive posture does not reflect the lived experiences of millions who are living in fear or have lost family members, homes, and livelihoods to insurgents and criminal groups.
“The government must move away from denying the severity of these attacks,” he said. “This persistent denial does not align with the suffering of innocent citizens. The government is aware of who is responsible for these killings.”
He urged authorities to prioritise protecting lives rather than focusing on political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, securing the nation should stand above all other interests.
Cardinal Onaiyekan concluded by calling for urgent, sincere action to restore confidence and ensure that Nigerians can live without fear of violence.
