U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has renewed criticism of the Nigerian government, saying its policies are creating conditions that allow Christians to be persecuted and even killed.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the Texas senator accused Nigerian authorities of failing to protect religious minorities.
He stated, “Nigerian officials know their policies have created an environment in which Christians are being persecuted and slaughtered, including their enforcement of sharia law and their tolerance of Islamist violence.”

Cruz’s comments came shortly after African Union Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Youssouf dismissed claims of genocide in northern Nigeria during a briefing at the United Nations.
Youssouf argued that the situation, though dire, should not be mischaracterized.
“There is no genocide in northern Nigeria,” he said, noting that Boko Haram’s victims include both Muslims and Christians. He added that the crisis is complex and should not be reduced to a single narrative.
Cruz, a longtime critic of Nigeria’s handling of religious freedom, has previously pushed for stronger US pressure, including possibly returning Nigeria to the list of Countries of Particular Concern—a designation it lost in 2021.
The Nigerian government has continued to reject accusations of religious persecution, insisting that the violence stems from terrorism, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes, not government policy.
