BREAKING: Wike Bans Use of Mobile Phones by AGIS Staff After Viral Clash With Naval Officer

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has banned the use of mobile phones by staff of the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and the Department of Land Administration following a viral video of his heated altercation with a naval officer.

According to an internal memo issued by AGIS Head, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, all officers on Salary Grade Level 14 and below are barred from bringing mobile phones into office premises starting Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

Sources said the directive came shortly after the viral video (showing Wike in a confrontation with a naval officer over a disputed property in Abuja) spread across WhatsApp groups reportedly shared by AGIS workers.

“The minister saw the video’s circulation as sabotage. This ban is a show of anger,” a source told reporters.

The policy has drawn criticism from civil rights groups and labour activists, who described it as “primitive and oppressive,” arguing that it violates workers’ rights and reflects intolerance to criticism.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned Wike’s conduct in the viral video, calling it an act of arrogance and disrespect toward a military officer on lawful duty.

NANS President, Comrade Atiku Isah, praised the officer’s calmness and urged President Bola Tinubu to caution the minister.
