A dramatic confrontation unfolded on Tuesday when the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, clashed with naval officers at Plot 1946, Gaduwa District, Abuja, over alleged illegal land development.

The minister had visited the site after receiving reports that armed soldiers had taken over the disputed property, allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd).

According to Wike, officials of the FCT Department of Development Control were previously chased away by soldiers while attempting to enforce a stop-work order. Upon his arrival, soldiers led by Naval Lieutenant A.M. Yarima blocked access to the site and prevented the minister from entering, insisting they were acting on “orders from above.”

Visibly angered, Wike demanded to know who gave the instructions but was met with defiance from the officer. The heated exchange ended with the minister leaving the scene in frustration.

Wike later told journalists that the land had no valid ownership documents or development approval. “I will not tolerate any form of intimidation or lawlessness,” he said. “No one, not even a former Chief of Naval Staff, is above the law.”

The minister disclosed that he had spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who promised to address the situation.

Wike reaffirmed that the FCT Administration would continue its crackdown on illegal land developments, stressing that using security operatives to obstruct enforcement “will not be accepted under any circumstance.”
