Thirty-one members of the United States Congress have endorsed President Donald Trump’s renewed call to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over what they describe as the “targeted persecution and killing of Christians.”
The lawmakers, led by Rep. Robert Aderholt, praised Trump for what they termed a “bold and compassionate” decision to confront religious violence in Nigeria.
“President Trump’s designation gives hope to persecuted Christians. The killing must stop,” Aderholt said in a statement.

Rep. Chris Smith, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, called the move “a crucial step toward holding the Nigerian government accountable for its silence in the face of murder, rape, and torture of Christians.”
Other Congress members, including Tom Emmer, Lisa McClain, Mary Miller, and Mark Alford, hailed Trump’s stance and urged tougher sanctions against Nigerian officials accused of ignoring the violence.
“God bless President Trump for standing up for Christians around the world,” Emmer said.
Trump had earlier declared on his Truth Social platform that Washington “will not stand by while Christians are being slaughtered,” hinting that the U.S. could suspend aid or consider military action if attacks persist.
The Nigerian government has dismissed the accusations, insisting that the country’s security challenges are not faith-based but part of a broader national crisis. Officials maintain that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and equal protection for all citizens.
