Tragedy struck Sokupkpan community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State as residents lynched the Chief Imam, Abdulahi Audu, over allegations that he was responsible for the mysterious illness and death of a villager, Ibrahim Gana.
According SaharaReporters that the violence erupted after Gana, before his death, repeatedly claimed that he saw the Imam attacking him in his dreams, insisting the cleric was the spiritual cause of his sickness. As Gana’s condition worsened and he eventually died, suspicion spread across the community, fueling anger and superstition.

“People began to believe Gana’s story, and after his death, some youths concluded that the Imam used witchcraft to kill him,” a source said.
On Wednesday, the tension boiled over when a mob (allegedly led by three men identified as Mohammed Shaba, Mamudu Gana, and Ndakpotun Issa) descended on the Chief Imam, beating him to death in broad daylight despite attempts by elders to stop the attack.
Police officers from the Tsaragi Division reportedly rushed to the scene and arrested the three suspects accused of leading the mob. The late Imam’s body was buried later that evening according to Islamic rites amid grief and fear in the community.
