"There is a Conspiracy in Tinubu Regime with the Judiciary To Sentence Nnamdi Kanu To Death Or Life Imprisonment" – Sowore Alleges

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of colluding with the judiciary to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is sentenced either to death or life imprisonment.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Sowore claimed that the verdict on Kanu’s ongoing trial had already been decided at “high political levels,” describing the current court proceedings as a mere formality designed to legitimize a prearranged outcome.

According to him, the case has “lost all sense of justice,” alleging that the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, may interpret Kanu’s refusal to open his defence as an admission of guilt—a move Sowore called a “convenient legal strategy” to justify a predetermined judgment.

The activist compared the situation to the 1995 execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight Ogoni leaders under General Sani Abacha, warning that Nigeria could be on the brink of repeating its darkest history. “This is no longer a trial in pursuit of justice; it is a test of Nigeria’s collective conscience,” he said.

His comments come after Justice Omotosho gave Kanu until November 5 to open his defence or be deemed to have waived his right. Kanu, however, insists there are no valid charges against him and has demanded his immediate release, maintaining that he will not defend himself in what he considers an unlawful trial.
