China Warns U.S. Against Interfering in Nigeria’s Internal Affairs

China has cautioned the United States against meddling in Nigeria’s internal affairs following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of possible military action over alleged persecution of Christians.

At a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed firm support for Nigeria, saying the country has the right to chart its own development path.

“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in another nation’s internal affairs or threaten it with sanctions and force,” she said.

Ning also restated China’s opposition to the use of military force in resolving international issues, urging the U.S. to pursue dialogue and cooperation instead of confrontation. “We stand against actions that undermine peace and stability,” she added.

Trump had earlier directed the U.S. Department of War to prepare for “possible action” in Nigeria, accusing the government of allowing attacks on Christians. He warned that continued inaction could lead to the withdrawal of U.S. aid and possible military intervention.

Reacting, President Bola Tinubu dismissed Trump’s remarks as misguided, insisting that Nigeria remains committed to protecting religious freedom. “Nigeria is not a religiously intolerant nation,” Tinubu said. “We have always safeguarded freedom of belief for all our citizens.”
