A deadly ambush by suspected bandits on the convoy of Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, the House of Representatives member for Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency, has left one soldier dead and several others injured in Niger State.
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area while the lawmaker was heading to Babanna on an official assignment.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, believed to be Lakurawa terrorists, opened fire on the convoy between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., targeting both the lead and rear vehicles. The sudden assault caused chaos among the lawmaker’s security team and supporters.

“One soldier died on the spot, and about eight others sustained serious injuries,” a security source confirmed, adding that the injured personnel were rushed to the General Hospital in New Bussa for treatment.
Four political aides were also reportedly wounded by stray bullets, though no civilian deaths were recorded. The attackers destroyed at least 11 vehicles before retreating into the nearby forest.
Sources said Damisa narrowly escaped death, thanks to the swift action of his security escorts and backup troops from the Forward Operating Base in Babanna, who repelled the attackers after an intense gunfight.
Security officials have since cleared the road and recovered all damaged vehicles. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Niger State, despite continued military operations in the area.
