Two senior members of the U.S. Congress, Gregory W. Meeks and Sara Jacobs, have sharply criticized President Donald Trump over his recent threats to suspend aid and use military force against Nigeria, describing his remarks as “reckless and irresponsible.”
In a joint statement on Monday, Meeks, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Jacobs, who leads the Africa Subcommittee, rejected Trump’s claims of Christian persecution in Nigeria. They argued that his position oversimplifies the country’s security challenges and misrepresents the situation on the ground.
“The violence in Nigeria is far more complex than Trump portrays,” they said. “Conflicts between farmers and herders are often tied to land disputes and climate pressures, not religion. Terrorist groups continue to target both Christians and Muslims, especially in the north.”

The lawmakers commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for encouraging interfaith harmony and strengthening national security, noting that all Nigerians (regardless of faith) deserve protection.
They also condemned Trump’s suggestion of a military intervention, warning that such actions could destabilize the region. “It is deeply irresponsible for President Trump to threaten military action. Providing assistance is one thing, but intervening militarily over distorted narratives would only escalate tensions,” the statement read.
On Trump’s proposal to cut off U.S. aid, Meeks and Jacobs cautioned that doing so would harm humanitarian and development efforts crucial to Nigeria’s stability. “Those aid programs support nutrition, education, and livelihoods—vital tools in curbing extremism,” they said.
