Sheikh Gumi Claims Middle Belt Groups Are Faking Christian Killings, and Burying 'Empty Coffins'

Controversial cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has warned that any U.S. bombing campaign against bandits in Nigeria would deepen the country’s security crisis rather than solve it.

Speaking on Arise TV, Gumi described the United States as a “nation of liars,” pointing to past interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya as examples of failed foreign meddling.

“If they come to bomb, I don’t believe them,” he said, arguing that airstrikes would cause massive civilian casualties and fuel more killings among both Muslims and Christians.

Gumi noted that even after two decades of fighting in Afghanistan, foreign forces failed to eliminate insurgents, and he doubted a similar strategy would work in Nigeria, where militants are deeply embedded in communities.

The cleric said negotiation and dialogue remain the most realistic path to peace. Drawing on his own controversial outreach to armed groups in northern forests, Gumi said his approach is to understand fighters’ grievances and persuade them to lay down their arms.

“You don’t treat a disease without diagnosis,” he said, adding that talks in places like Kaduna have helped reduce mass killings by addressing militants’ psychology and needs.

Gumi also argued that offers from countries like China or Russia might be viewed as more sincere, because, he claimed, they do not interfere in internal affairs the way Western powers do.

He warned that force-for-force tactics will only “compound the problem” and urged the government and international partners to prioritise negotiation, rehabilitation and community-focused strategies to restore lasting security.
