President Bola Tinubu will meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days to discuss allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, the presidency said on Saturday.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication, announced the planned meeting on X, saying the leaders will focus on counterterrorism cooperation and “clarifying misconceptions” about the nature of attacks in Nigeria.
“Both President Tinubu and President Trump have shared interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism,” Bwala wrote. He added that past U.S. arms sales have supported Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts and that the meeting could take place at either the State House or the White House.

The announcement follows Trump’s recent declaration naming Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over claims that Christians are being targeted en masse. Trump has also threatened to halt U.S. aid and said he asked the Pentagon to prepare possible military options if violence continues.
Those moves were prompted in part by U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore’s allegation of widespread persecution of Christians, a claim the Nigerian government has repeatedly disputed.
Bwala said the forthcoming talks will aim to resolve differences and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in tackling terrorism and protecting all citizens.
