
At least 17 people have been killed in a series of coordinated attacks by gunmen in communities across Plateau and Kaduna states.
In Kaduna, seven residents lost their lives when gunmen stormed Damakasuwa community in Chawai Chiefdom, Kauru Local Government Area, around 8 p.m. on Friday. Witnesses said the attackers fired sporadically, sending villagers fleeing into nearby bushes for safety.
The Paramount Chief of Chawai, Alhaji Yahaya Muhammad, confirmed that five people died instantly, while two others succumbed to injuries later. “The situation created panic, but security forces have since restored calm. We urge residents to remain peaceful as investigations continue,” he said.

A youth leader, Barnabas Chawai, described the attack as sudden and ruthless. “They opened fire on people who were either preparing for bed or relaxing outside. One victim was rushed to Jos with a gunshot wound to the throat,” he added.
In Plateau State, ten people were also killed in separate attacks between Friday and Saturday. Seven died in Kwi community, Riyom Local Government Area, while three others were killed in Pushit, Mangu Local Government Area.
Community leader Rwang Tengwon blamed suspected militia for the Kwi assault, calling for stronger security intervention. The Mwaghavul Development Association also condemned the attacks, urging authorities to act swiftly.
Both state police commands have yet to release official statements, but residents continue to call for tighter patrols and stronger security presence in the affected areas.
