U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian government, threatening to cut off all U.S. aid and possibly take military action if the killing of Christians in Nigeria continues.
In a statement shared on his Truth Social account, Trump condemned Nigeria’s handling of religious violence and described the country as a “now disgraced nation.” He accused the government of allowing Islamic terrorists to carry out atrocities against Christians and declared that America “may very well go into that country, guns-a-blazing,” to eliminate the perpetrators.
Trump’s remarks followed his earlier designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution. He also claimed to have instructed the U.S. Department of War to prepare for potential action, warning that any attack from the U.S. would be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”

The Nigerian government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier responded to Trump’s designantion, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and tolerance. Tinubu, in a statement dismissed the portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant, emphasizing that his administration has maintained active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders to promote peace and address insecurity.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so,” Tinubu said. “Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”
He added that his administration remains open to working with the United States and the international community to strengthen cooperation and protect citizens of all faiths.
However, Trump’s continuous warnings implies seriousness, which has gotten the whole country and its media on toes, with many claiming the U.S. doesn’t want to save Nigeria, but are interested in the country’s resources.
