Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the successful test of a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the 9M730 Burevestnik (codenamed “Skyfall” by NATO) claiming it possesses “unlimited range” and is “invincible” against any missile defence system.
Putin made the announcement during a visit to a Russian military command post, describing the missile as a revolutionary weapon unmatched by any other nation. “It is a truly unique system, one that no other country in the world possesses,” he declared.
According to Russia’s top commander, General Valery Gerasimov, the missile recently flew over 14,000 kilometres during a 15-hour test. The Burevestnik, roughly 12 metres long, is said to carry a thermonuclear warhead and is designed for intercontinental strikes.

However, Western analysts have labelled it the “Flying Chernobyl,” citing the enormous environmental risks of a nuclear-propelled engine. The project has suffered several failures since 2016, including a deadly explosion in 2019 that killed engineers and released radiation.
Despite global concern, Putin insists the weapon is nearing full deployment, grouping it among Russia’s six “super weapons,” including the Sarmat ICBM and the Poseidon underwater drone.
U.S. experts remain doubtful of its readiness, noting instability in its nuclear engine. Yet, the timing of Putin’s announcement—amid renewed Russian airstrikes that killed and injured dozens in Ukraine—has drawn criticism as a show of defiance to the West.
