The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has approved the creation of a new state in Nigeria’s South-East region.
According to a statement released by the committee’s media unit, the decision was reached during a two-day retreat held in Lagos, where lawmakers reviewed 55 proposals for new states across the country.
The session was chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and co-chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu. Both lawmakers agreed that, in the spirit of fairness and equity, the South-East deserves another state to bring it at par with other regions.

Currently, the South-East has only five states (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo) while other zones have six each, except the North-West, which has seven.
Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) moved the motion for the creation of the new state, which was seconded by Ibrahim Isiaka (Ifo/Ewekoro, Ogun State). The motion reportedly received unanimous support from the committee members.
The committee also set up a sub-committee to review the creation of additional states and local governments across all six geo-political zones, noting that 278 proposals were submitted.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin urged lawmakers to build consensus ahead of the final voting phase in the National and State Assemblies to ensure the resolutions are approved.
