Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was arrested on Thursday by armed policemen at the Federal High Court in Abuja, moments after showing solidarity with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Eyewitnesses said Sowore was approached by security operatives who insisted he follow them to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. When asked about the reason for the arrest, one of the officers reportedly stated they were acting on “orders from the Commissioner of Police.”
“The Commissioner of Police said we should bring you to the office,” the officer was quoted as saying before Sowore was taken away.

The activist, however, demanded that his lawyer accompany him, noting that he had received no prior invitation from the police.
Confirming the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemned the action, describing it as “a mockery of Nigeria’s judicial system” and calling for Sowore’s immediate release.

Sowore has been a prominent voice in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement and recently led a peaceful protest in Abuja on October 20, demanding Kanu’s unconditional release. During that demonstration, Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel, and his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, were among those arrested and remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The court has scheduled Friday for their arraignment on charges of criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, and breaching public peace.
