Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has renewed calls for the amendment of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to allow a single six-year term for the President and state governors.

Speaking in a video shared on his Facebook page on Sunday, October 19, 2025, Kalu said the reform would reduce political tension, promote national stability, and help leaders focus more on governance than campaigning for re-election.

“In my private opinion, I appeal to my colleagues on the constitutional review committee, led by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jubril Barau, and the House committee chaired by Hon. Benjamin Kalu, to consider a six-year single tenure,” he said. “After four years, leaders become distracted by the next election. Let everyone know they have only one term to serve and focus on delivering for the people.”

Kalu argued that the proposed system would discourage corruption and wealth accumulation for political gain. According to him, the current structure encourages officeholders to misuse public funds in preparation for second-term bids.

He added that Nigeria must adapt its democratic system to suit local realities rather than copy Western models blindly. “Our economy cannot sustain the American-style system. A single term will bring confidence and reduce waste,” he noted.

Kalu suggested that the policy could take effect in either 2027 or 2031 and emphasized that his proposal was purely for national interest, not personal gain.
