Protesters demanding the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, were forced to flee on Monday morning after security operatives fired teargas and live bullets to disperse them near the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.
The demonstrators, led by human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, had gathered around the Ministry of Women Affairs headquarters as early as 6:50 a.m. under the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign.
Security agencies (including the Nigerian Police, the Guards Brigade, the DSS, and the NSCDC) had tightened security around key government buildings, including the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, and Eagle Square, following prior threats of the march.

The protesters had vowed to proceed to the Presidential Villa to press for Kanu’s release but were met with heavy resistance. Witnesses said the officers initially appeared ready to use teargas but suddenly began firing live ammunition, forcing the crowd to scatter for safety.
Before the gunshots, Sowore and other protesters were seen shouting at officers to respect the rule of law, insisting they had a constitutional right to peaceful protest. However, they all took to their heels when the security officers started firing teargas at them, including Sowore himself.
It is reported that several people have been shot and injured. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, has also been arrested alongside his Lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives, including Armoured Personnel Carriers, remained stationed around major junctions leading to the Presidential Villa and surrounding government offices.
