Tension is brewing within Nigeria’s Armed Forces as at least sixteen senior military officers, including a Brigadier General, have reportedly been arrested for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, a report from SaharaReporters confirms.
Sources within the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) confirmed that the officers were picked up across different locations in recent days after intelligence reports revealed plans for a possible coup. The officers, said to be within the ranks of Captain to Brigadier General, are currently being detained at the DIA headquarters in Abuja.
Although the military had earlier described their arrest as a “routine disciplinary exercise” linked to “career stagnation and repeated failure in promotion exams,” multiple sources disclosed that the official explanation was deliberately vague to prevent public panic.

A senior intelligence official revealed that the alleged coup plotters had been holding secret meetings aimed at removing “selfish politicians” from power and establishing a military government. “They had mapped out plans to strike during the Independence Day celebrations on October 1,” the source said.
The alleged plot reportedly forced the federal government to cancel the 2025 Independence Day parade, following warnings from security agencies about a potential attack targeting the President and other top officials.
Nigeria, which has experienced several coups since independence in 1960, has not seen a successful military takeover since 1993. However, growing dissatisfaction within the ranks and corruption allegations have recently stirred unease among officers.
