"Politicians busy defecting, but the only defection that matters is the defection of hunger which is yet to happen" — Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said that despite the ongoing wave of political defections across the country, the most significant defection Nigerians should be concerned about—the “defection of hunger and poverty”—is yet to happen.

Makinde made the remark in reaction to the recent spate of defections by some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.

Speaking on the development, the governor said political movements had once again taken centre stage in national discourse while the real issues affecting citizens were being ignored.

“I am sure many of you have been following the recent defections of politicians—especially governors who have left the PDP for the APC and other parties. With these defections, political pundits have been busy reading meanings into every handshake and silence. But for me, the only defection that truly matters is the one that has not happened yet—the defection of hunger,” Makinde said.

He lamented that many Nigerian families are struggling daily to survive, forced to make difficult choices as economic hardship deepens.

Makinde further urged the PDP to focus on rebuilding public trust by offering credible solutions to the country’s economic challenges, adding that only Nigerians (not political manoeuvres) would determine the outcome of the 2027 elections.
