The Senate has confirmed Prof. Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and endorsement by the National Council of State.
Amupitan, a 58-year-old professor of law, was confirmed after a rigorous two-hour screening on Thursday, where senators questioned him on how he plans to reform Nigeria’s electoral system and restore public trust in the commission.
During the session, the newly confirmed INEC boss vowed to strengthen the credibility of elections in Nigeria, pledging to deliver a system where “even losers will congratulate winners.”

“We’re going to ensure that elections are credible enough for the loser to say, ‘You won fairly and well.’ Just like a convict who, after being sentenced, still believes justice has been served,” Amupitan said.
He promised to review the Electoral Act to address inconsistencies in election timelines, audit the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to fix technical flaws, and promote voter education from the primary school level to build civic awareness.
Amupitan also dismissed speculations linking him to President Tinubu’s 2023 election legal team, insisting, “I did not appear in the presidential election tribunal or at the Supreme Court.”
Amupitan now succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the sixth substantive INEC Chairman, promising to usher in a new era of electoral integrity and transparency.
